Developing Telepathy

Telepathy is the ability to send and receive information to and from another individual (or animal) over a distance without reliance on the usual physical senses. This extra-sensory ability is one that has been practiced for thousands of years, and it is one of the siddhis (paranormal powers) which was written about in the yogic tradition. Whilst the siddhis were often viewed as rather trivial distractions by those seeking to achieve spiritual enlightenment, they can be developed for their own sake by anyone on the magickal path, and it needn’t take decades of deep meditation to do so.

Those of us who live with increasingly ubiquitous internet access and smartphones might not have as much need for telepathy as ancient civilisations, but it is a skill which still has its uses. We will discuss some of the practical applications of telepathy next time, but today we will first explain how anyone who wishes to do so can develop their telepathic ability, not in decades or years, but potentially in a matter of weeks or months.

How to Develop Telepathy

The first step to developing your telepathic ability is to recognise that it isn’t anything unusual. All living creatures are telepathic to some extent, and some – such as whales – use it as a matter of course. Consider those times when you just knew what someone else was going to say before they said it, or when you intuitively knew who was calling you before you picked up the telephone. Those are both examples of spontaneous telepathy, and the only thing that sets human beings apart from other creatures is that we can choose to work on developing and increasing our natural telepathic ability in a conscious and deliberate manner.

Next, you need to understand that telepathy works best for those who have previously developed both their ability to relax and their ability to concentrate. Both of those things can be developed to extremely high levels through a sincere and dedicated meditation practice, and if you have not yet established the habit of daily or twice-daily meditation, it is strongly recommended that you devote yourself to that for at least a few weeks before attempting to develop your telepathic ability. As a first port of call, see our text on Magick and Meditation, and then consider obtaining a copy of The Mindfulness in Plain English Collection by Bhante Gunaratana, which will teach you all that you need to know.

Having recognised that telepathy is a natural ability, and having trained your mind through regular meditation practice, you should start getting into the habit of sending communications by thought. Begin by trying to communicate with animals, such as a pet cat or dog. To do this, sit quietly, take a few deep breaths to relax yourself, and then concentrate on sending a positive emotion, such as love or calm, to the chosen animal.

Sending an emotion is achieved by establishing that emotion within yourself, and then visualising yourself projecting that emotional energy out to the animal. How you visualise this projection of energy is up to you, but it can often be helpful to imagine it as a stream of coloured energy, the colour of which corresponds with the projected emotion.

It is important to understand at this point that telepathic communication is more about sending and receiving the emotion of a message rather than any specific words. We begin with animals because we don’t usually expect them to understand language very well, and that makes it easier for us to get into the habit of thinking and projecting emotionally rather than linguistically.

As you practice this technique with animals, make a note of how they respond, and when it seems to you that they respond to your telepathic projections more often than not, you can proceed to use a similar technique with human beings.

When attempting telepathic communication with another human being who is in your line of sight, you can use the same technique that we just provided for communicating with animals. However, if the chosen individual is not in sight, because they are located in a different area, region or even in a different country, for example, the following technique should be used:

Take a few deep breaths to relax yourself, and then close your eyes. Establish the feeling of the message you wish to communicate within yourself, and then imagine that you are standing in front of the person you wish to communicate with. From that perspective, project the energy of your communication into the head and heart centres of the recipient. At the same time, visualise the recipient becoming aware that they have received your communication.

The more emotion you can invest in a telepathic communication, the more effective it will be, and this is why most people only experience notable occurrences of telepathy when a loved one is experiencing some kind of distress or ecstasy. As you practice, your ability to invest emotion into your energy projections will increase, and your telepathic ability will follow suit quite naturally.

Receiving telepathic communications from others is largely a matter of developing your intuition, as energy from others is received via the same pathways as intuitive knowledge. A very useful exercise is to sit quietly, visualise yourself standing next to the person you wish to receive from, and allow the energy of whatever they are experiencing to enter your consciousness of its own accord. In other words, aim to be more passive when attempting to receive than you are when sending communications.

Like all such abilities, telepathy is something that takes time and diligent effort to develop properly. It is suggested that you get into the habit of practicing your telepathic skills on a daily basis by using the techniques presented here, and it won’t be long before you realise how effective they can be.
